I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And by oath of the night when it turns back. 33 And by the dawn when it brightens, 34 surely it is one of the greatest things 35 A warning to mortals, 36 A warning unto him of you who shall go forward or who chooseth to lag behind. 37 Every soul is held in pledge against its own deeds, 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 In Gardens; they shall be asking, 40 Concerning the culprits: 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They will reply, "We did not pray, 43 and we did not feed the needy. 44 And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate, 45 And we used to call the day of judgment a lie; 46 until there came to us the certainty. 47 The mediation of no mediators will avail them then. 48 Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away 49 like startled wild donkeys 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. 52 No indeed; the truth is that they have no fear of the Hereafter. 53 Never so, as this is a reminder. 54 So whosoever willeth may heed it. 55 No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness. 56
