The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
