The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And pollution shun. 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
