He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And hath fear, 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and purified. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
