The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
