Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My servants. 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
