The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
