Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O the contented soul! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 into My Paradise. 30
