a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 Verily we are undone. 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
