The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
