O Children of Israel: remember My favour wherewith I favoured you, and that verily I preferred you over the world. 47 Take heed of the day when no man will be useful to man in the least, when no intercession matter nor ransom avail, nor help reach them. 48 Remember when We delivered you from Pharaoh's people, who subjected you to grievous torment, slaying your sons and sparing only your daughters, surely in that there was a great trial for you from your Lord, 49 And when We brought you through the sea and rescued you, and drowned the folk of Pharaoh in your sight. 50 And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him, while you were wrongdoers. 51 then We pardoned you after that, that haply you should be thankful. 52 Remember, We gave Moses the Book and Discernment of falsehood and truth, that you may be guided. 53 And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his people: "O my people! Verily, you have wronged yourselves by worshipping the calf. So turn in repentance to your Creator and kill yourselves (the innocent kill the wrongdoers among you), that will be better for you with your Lord." Then He accepted your repentance. Truly, He is the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. 54 And [remember] when you said, "O Moses, indeed we shall not believe thee unto we see God face to face!" - whereupon the thunderbolt of punishment overtook you before your very eyes. 55 Then We brought you back to life after your death, so that you might be grateful. 56 We provided you with shade from the clouds and sent down manna and quails as the best pure sustenance for you to eat. They (children of Israel) did not wrong Us but wronged themselves. 57 And when We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from what is in it, and enter the gate whilst prostrating, and say, ‘May our sins be forgiven’ – We will forgive you your sins; and We will soon increase the reward for the righteous.” 58 But those who were bent on evildoing substituted another saying for that which had been given them: and so We sent down upon those evildoers a plague from heaven in requital for all their iniquity. 59
