He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to a rich man, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and in awe of God 9 You neglect. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 noble, pious. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
