The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
