Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Join My servants. 29 into My Paradise. 30
