Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 The command that We have been sending 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
