The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
