Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
