The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
