A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
