The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
