The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
