The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 And [by] the sky and He who constructed it 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
