Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 So enter among My servants, 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
