The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
