The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
