He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fears (Allah), 9 You neglect. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
