Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
