The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
