Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
