He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 In honored books, 13 exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
