The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 then inspired it to understand what was right and wrong for it. 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
