Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
