Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
