By the moon, 32 and the night when it retreats 33 And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- 34 Verily it is one of the greatest woes. 35 A warning to mankind, 36 to whoever among you desires to go forward, or lag behind. 37 Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They will answer: "We did not fulfil our devotional obligations, 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, 45 and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, 46 until the Inevitable End [death] overtook us." 47 So no intercession will avail them. 48 Why now turn they away from the Admonishment, 49 like frightened donkeys 50 fleeing from a lion? 51 Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 There is no doubt that the Quran is a guide. 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 But none will remember, unless Allah wills, He is the Owner of fear, the Owner of forgiveness. 56
