We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided." 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 So We made them a bygone fable and a lesson for the latter generations. 56
