The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I swear by the Mountain, 1 by the book (Torah) written 2 On fine parchment unrolled, 3 by the House inhabited 4 by the high ceiling (heaven), 5 and by the swelling sea: 6 VERILY, [O man,] the suffering decreed by thy Sustainer [for the sinners] will indeed come to pass: 7 There is none that can ward it off. 8 On the Day when the heaven will shake with a dreadful shaking, 9 and the mountains shudder and shake. 10 Then woe, that Day, to the deniers, 11 Who play in talk of grave matters; 12 On that Day when they shall be pitched into the Fire of Gehenna (Hell), 13 and they will be told, "This is the fire which you called a lie. 14 Is it magic, or you cannot see? 15 Go now and burn in it. It is all the same whether you bear it patiently or do not bear it with patience. You are only being recompensed for your deeds.” 16 But in the Gardens the righteous shall live in bliss, 17 rejoicing in all that their Sustainer will have granted them: for their Sustainer will have warded off from them all suffering through the blazing fire. 18 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working. 19 Reclining on thrones, in rows; and We have wedded them to maidens with gorgeous eyes. 20 We shall unite the believers with those descendants of theirs who followed them in their faith, and shall not deny them any part of the reward for their good deeds. Every person is pledged to what he did. 21 And We shall succour them with fruits and flesh such as they desire 22 They shall pass therein from one to another a cup wherein there shall be nothing vain nor any sin. 23 ۞ And there go round, waiting on them menservants of their own, as they were hidden pearls. 24 They will advance to each other, engaging in mutual enquiry. 25 Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious; 26 and God was gracious to us, and guarded us against the chastisement of the burning wind; 27 "Truly, we did call unto Him from of old: truly it is He, the Beneficent, the Merciful!" 28
