The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ OF WHAT ARE they asking one another? 1 They quarrel about the great news 2 concerning which they have disputes. 3 No indeed; soon will they come to know; 4 Again, by no means! anon they shall know. 5 HAVE WE NOT made the earth a resting-place [for you,] 6 And the mountains as stakes? 7 And We have created you in pairs (male and female, tall and short, good and bad, etc.). 8 And have appointed your sleep for repose, 9 and We made the night a mantle, 10 And the day for seeking livelihood. 11 And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments, 12 and We have set therein a glowing lamp. 13 And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water, 14 that We may bring forth thereby grain and plants, 15 And gardens of thick foliage. 16 Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time, 17 the Day when the Trumpet shall be blown, and you will come forth in multitudes; 18 The heavens will have openings like doors. 19 and the mountains shall be made to vanish, as if they had been a mirage. 20 [On that Day,] verily, hell will lie in wait [for those who deny the truth] 21 For the transgressors, a place of return, 22 Where they will remain for aeons, 23 Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink. 24 save boiling water and pus 25 Recompense fitted! 26 Indeed, they were not expecting an account 27 and they absolutely belied Our verses, 28 And everything We have recorded in a book. 29 [And so We shall say:] "Taste, then, [the fruit of your evil doings,] for now We shall bestow on you nothing but more and more suffering!" 30
