The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
