The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
