The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the setting star, 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
