The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
