(The tribe of) A’ad denied the Noble Messengers. 123 When their fellowman Hud said to them, “Do you not fear?” 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 and erect castles hoping that you will live forever. 129 and when you strike you strike like tyrants? 130 "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: 131 "And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know. 132 “He aided you with cattle and sons.” 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 I am afraid that you will suffer the torment of the Day of Judgment." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 This is naught but a custom of the ancients; 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 139 And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
