The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
