Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed. 109 Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?" 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 That they may bring to you every enchanter possessed of knowledge. 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113 "Yes," said he, "you will be among the honoured." 114 Then they said: 'O Moses, will you [first] throw your rod, or shall we throw?' 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 And [then] We inspired Moses, "Throw down thy staff!" - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions: 117 ۞ Thus the Truth prevailed and their false art was banished. 118 Thus there and then they were vanquished and overthrown, humiliated. 119 and the magicians flung themselves prostrate, 120 And said: "We have come to believe in the Lord of all the worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron' 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all." 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
