The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the declining star, 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
