The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, "This is most surely a skillful magician, 109 who seeks to drive you from your land what do you command' 110 They said: Put him off and his brother, and send collectors into the cities: 111 to bring thee every cunning sorcerer.' 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and said: 'Shall we have a reward if we win?' 113 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 114 Then they said: 'O Moses, will you [first] throw your rod, or shall we throw?' 115 He said: cast ye. Then when they cast down, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and terrified them and brought mighty magic to bear. 116 And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff! And lo! it swallowed up their lying show. 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and what they did became null. 118 The magicians who were defeated on the spot and were proved to be worthless, 119 And the enchanters were thrown down, prostrating (themselves). 120 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,- 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one. 124 They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. 125 And what is it for which thou takest vengeance on us save that we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came unto us? Our Lord! pour out upon us perseverance and cause us to die as Muslims. 126
