He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 Yet you pay attention 5 To him you attend; 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
