The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM MIM. 1 The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) 2 In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer 3 Within ten years - Allah's is the command in the former case and in the latter - and in that day believers will rejoice 4 in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. 5 This is the promise of God. God does not ignore His promise, but many people do not know. 6 They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware. 7 Do they not reflect in their own minds? Not but for just ends and for a term appointed, did Allah create the heavens and the earth, and all between them: yet are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord (at the Resurrection)! 8 Have they, then, never journeyed about the earth and beheld what happened in the end to those [deniers of the truth] who lived before their time? Greater were they in power than they are; and they left a stronger impact on the earth, and built it up even better than these [are doing]; and to them [too] came their apostles with all evidence of the truth: and so, [when they rejected the truth and thereupon perished,] it was not God who wronged them, but it was they who had wronged themselves. 9 Then the end of those who committed evil was evil, for they belied the signs of Allah and they were wont to mock at them. 10
