Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
