a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
